Karen's Garden was a huge suceess this season. Last Friday marked the end of the growing season as the remaining tomato plants were pulled and composted. On Saturday, December 1, 2007 a thick, wet, heavy snow blanketed the Milwaukee area. About 4 inches of snow/sleet/freezing rain/and eventually rain fell in a little less that 12 hours time. A quiet, still calm surrounds the garden. It is far from inactive. Below the snow, arthropods of all types are digging in and foraging for food. Worms are diving a bit deeper to escape the now freezing ground and bacteria are quickly using any organics in and on the soil as nutrients. Activity is slow, but it is not lifeless. As we await the coming of spring and another growing season, we can look back on a fantastic experience for USM.
