Compost Temperature Readings

Today I visited a few 6th grade science classes to show the students our worm composting bin that we started a few weeks ago. Many of the students seemed to enjoy the process of exploring and discovering with the red worms/earth worms and the compost material itself. Following our look at the worm bin we took a walk out to our compost processing area and recorded the temperature of the three different compost heaps. Students also opened up and dumped out the contents of their anaerobic bottle compost systems that they constructed several weeks ago.

See the pictures above of the students exploring and discovering with the material in the red worm composting bin.

We currently have three active compost heaps. One is from November-December-January. The second is from January-February-March. And the third is from April-May and June.

We recorded the temperature in Fahrenheit when we visited the compost processing facility with the 6th grade students today.

Nov-Dec-Jan heap temp reading: 90.8
Jan-Feb-March heap temp reading: 137
April-May-June heap temp reading: 150

The temperature of the worm bin was 80.

Outdoor air temperature as of 2:05 PM today: 49
