USM Attends Growing Power Conference

Last Saturday, May 19, 2007 and Sunday, May 20, 2007, I had the pleasure of attending the Growing Power Workshop. It was fabulous. Many of the things I learned at the conference will have a direct impact on developing a sustainable food program at USM.

Hosted by Will Allen, Growing Power offered several unique and interesting classes on different methods of sustainability farming. Recycling and reusing waste and producing crops in a sustainable fashion was the focus for the weekend. Vermi-farming, aquaponics, bee keeping, sprout production and planting, strategic planning and composting were all areas that we enriched ourselves with in the program.

The five members included two teachers, myself and Matt Montagne, and three students, 7th graders Jackson Marlin and Sara Filali, and 8th grader Charlotte Lange. I attended vermi-farming and sustainable, portable planting, while Matt attended strategic planning and vermi-farming. The three students focused on aquaponics for the duration of the program.
