2007 Compost

The compost from last year is rich with nutrients. We added 3-4 inches of of compost to the beds in Karen's Garden. Folding the compost into the soil helps to add valuable nutrients for spring/summer planting. For our compost at school, we use a mixture of greens: cucumber peels, lettuce scraps, carrot scraps, pineapple ends, apple peels and cores, orange rinds, watermelon rinds, banana peels and what ever else the kitchen adds after their vegetable and fruit preparation. To the greens we add browns. This adds the necessary carbon to the compost. Layering greens and browns once a week gives us a bounty of compost to use for the garden and for vermicomposting.
